PM Narendra Modi inaugurates 32nd international conference of agricultural economists on “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) Complex today, emphasizing the crucial role of agriculture in India’s economic policy.

This prestigious conference, held in India after 65 years, is themed “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems.” In his address, PM Modi underscored the significant strides India has made in the agricultural sector.

He remarked, “We are strengthening the agriculture sector with reforms and measures aimed at improving the lives of farmers.” Reflecting on India’s journey since independence.

He highlighted the nation’s evolution from grappling with food security challenges to becoming a food surplus country, now recognized as the largest producer of milk, pulses, and spices.

India’s food security was once a global concern, but today, we are actively contributing solutions for global food and nutrition security,” Modi said. He further noted India’s efforts in promoting chemical-free natural farming and the emphasis on sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices in the recent budget.

A considerable focus remains on research and development related to climate-resilient crops. Modi highlighted India’s status as the world’s largest millet producer, a crop often referred to as a ‘Superfood.’

“Millets operate on the principle of minimum water usage and maximum production, and our diverse superfoods can significantly address global nutrition challenges,” he added.

India’s extensive network of over 100 ICAR institutes and more than 500 colleges dedicated to agricultural and related studies, along with over 700 Agricultural Science Centres, play a pivotal role in transferring advanced technologies to farmers.

Modi pointed out the unique agricultural diversity across India, noting, “Farming in India changes with every 100 km. This diversity makes Indian agriculture a beacon of hope for global food security.”

The six-day conference has drawn distinguished international delegates who have lauded India’s agricultural potential and its overall growth narrative. The event underscores the global recognition of India’s agricultural advancements and its pivotal role in addressing global food security challenges.

The 32nd ICAE conference marks a significant milestone, reflecting India’s commitment to transforming its agri-food systems towards sustainability and resilience, ensuring a prosperous future for its farmers, and contributing to global agricultural development.
